Welcome to Year One's Class Web Page!
Summer Term Class Letter
Thursday 8th June 2017
Welcome back and hope you have had a relaxing half term break!
Our theme for this term is People Who Help Us. In English we will be studying fictional texts such as ‘Cops and Robbers’ and ‘Burglar Bill’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We will be focusing on writing book reviews, identifying characters and settings, and writing a newspaper report which will be linked to the fictional texts. Also linked to this topic, will be a trip to Lees fire station on Thursday 15th June (9.30am -1.30pm). More details about this trip will follow shortly.
In Numeracy we will be focusing on multiplication and division, including arrays to help understand multiplication, and continue learning doubling and halving facts. We will also be learning about fractions, finding a halves and quarters of shapes, lengths, and quantities. We will continue with securing number facts by counting on and back in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, and also 2x, 5x and 10x tables; these can also be practised at home. We will also be consolidating time and weight.
In Science we will learn about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and which animals belong to each of these groups. We will also be identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.
In art we will be focusing on the artist Andrew Goldsworthy, and finding out about how he uses natural objects to create his work. The children will then produce their own piece of artwork using natural objects from around the school grounds.
As the sun is beginning to shine and the warm weather approaches, it is the time of year again to ensure that your child is protected from the sun. You can send sun-cream into school with your child, however school staff are not permitted to help with the administration of the cream. Your child will need to been shown how to do this at home. Alternatively there are many sun-creams now available that only need to be administered once a day and so this could be done before your child comes to school.
May we also take this opportunity to remind you that your child should bring a filled and clearly named water bottle to school with them each day. Sunglasses, sun hats and jackets are also advised to help to protect your child. Please can you also ensure that cardigans and jumpers are clearly named, as children often take them off during playtime?
I hope we can continue to work well as a team in order to give your child the best experiences possible in Year 1. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to me after school (though staff meeting nights on Wednesday is best avoided). Mrs Leigh will also be available by prior appointment.
